FDA Issues Proposed Food Safety Rules

…stay tuned for a full analysis and action items!

On January 4, 2013 FDA issued proposed rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act. The two sets of proposed rules address on-farm produce safety standards and hazard analysis plans for facilities.

The proposed rules include the Tester-Hagan amendment that we fought for, exempting small-scale, direct-marketing producers. But the proposed rules will still impact small-scale producers who sell wholesale, as well as medium-size producers. Our quick initial review shows that there are several issues of concern.

It will take a few weeks to do a full analysis of the 1,200 pages of proposed rules. As soon as possible, we will post specific comments and action item.

You can read the proposed rules, as well as FDA’s summaries, on the agency’s Food Safety Modernization Act page.
